Why I hired my own marketing consultant

Recently I’ve made one of the best decisions for my business. It might sound weird, but I’ve hired my own marketing consultant and I can tell you I am absolutely loving it. In a moment of clarity I realised that I was not practicing what I am preaching and made the decision to turn that around. I hired Gina Hill, who has been working as a Twinlife Marketing consultant for the past 3.5 years, as my marketing consultant with Joanne Akkari, who is our head of marketing consulting, as the back-up consultant. They have turned my world upside down (in a good way).


Why am I not the best marketing consultant for my own business?

I might think that I am a great marketer, but…

  1. whyLike most business owners I am too emotionally involved with my own company and my own brand. Because of this, I lose clarity and perspective.
  2. Like most business owners I am handling much more than marketing and although I am doing a bit of consistent marketing, there are so many more opportunities that I am leaving untapped.
  3. Like most business owners I am putting my clients’ needs in front of my own needs, which means that I ended up like the plumber with the leaking tap. It’s a joke that it took me about 9 months to finally get my website updated and onto a mobile platform. And now that my marketing consultant has had a critical look after we’ve done the marketing strategy, there is still a lot of work to do to improve our website.

What have I learned from working with my marketing consultant?

First of all I now know how our clients feel, as I have experienced first-hand the process that our clients go through, when they take on a Twinlife Marketing consultant. I’ve felt nurtured, challenged and listened to.

The first marketing workshop was really enjoyable. I felt even better after Gina presented the strategic marketing plan to me. It created a lot of clarity, which led into smart strategy and a practical implementation plan.

Both Gina and Joanne have pushed me out of my comfort zone and have come up with some brilliant marketing ideas that I could not have come up with myself. There is so much power in combining the knowledge and passion of a business owner with the outside fresh perspective of a team of marketing experts.

As a first step, we’ve run our strategic marketing plan past our internal team and as expected (not because they are all marketing consultants, but because this quite often happens when you share ideas internally), we got even more great ideas on the table.

Gina is now keeping us very focused on staying on track and making sure we do the right marketing activities at the right time and in the right order. It’s so nice to have someone else taking on this responsibility and guiding me through it step by step. I love it!

  1. Always important to differentiate between consulting and running one’s own business, especially if you are running a business on an hourly rate. It is key to set aside specific time for internal management.
