What I’ve learnt from my kids

What I’ve learnt from my kids

Today is a special day…It’s been 7 years since my life has been turned upside down and changed completely with the arrival of my two little monsters Jordi & Dylan. Little did I know at that stage how much turmoil they would create in my life and how much I would re-asses everything that I had been doing so far, but most of all I wasn’t aware of the great teachers they would become for me and for that I will be eternally grateful.

Of course the first 1,5 years were more exhausting than anything (I sometimes still wonder how Arjen and I survived that time), but after that things got a whole lot better and much more fun too.

Jordi & Dylan have opened my eyes, helped me get rid of fear, taught me how to live in the moment and have shown me the true value of enjoyment. They have been the catalyst for many positive changes in my life.

They’ve helped me break free!
They’ve been responsible for dragging me out of the ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality of the corporate world and start doing something that I am truly passionate about and very much enjoy. Instead of fighting politics and being stuck in endless useless meetings, I am now deciding every minute of the day what I want to do and best of all I am able to spend time with people that I like to have around. I am extremely lucky to work with the best team of marketers, who are not only extremely good at what they do, but are the most beautiful people. I am extremely lucky that we get to work with the nicest clients, with whom we build up very strong relationships.

They’ve helped me slow down, be present and be more in balance.
I learnt very early on that I first needed to look after myself, before I was able to look after my kids. This meant that I had to give up my crazy go, go, go lifestyle and really slow down. It wasn’t easy at first, but now I can’t imagine going back to the ‘old’ way. I exchanged my crazy ‘going to the gym and go hard’ everyday routine with a daily yoga and meditation practice, which has not only been so much better for my body, but also for my total feeling of well-being. By slowing down and really focusing on being present in the moment, life becomes a whole lot more enjoyable and fun. It sparks creativity and it is much easier to focus on solutions instead of problems.

They’ve helped me simplify and listen to my gut feeling.
Children are very logical and they are very much in tune with their true self. They say what they think and that makes them very easy to be around. They are very intuitive and this is a great skill that we often lose later in life. Through listening to their logic and spending time with them, I’ve been able to break things down, simplify them and rely much more on my intuition. It has helped me make better decisions and be better at what I do.

What have you learnt from your children? Please share it with me, as I would love to hear from you.

  1. Lovely article Sonia, and very much my experience 20 years ago!
