The power of making mistakes

The power of making mistakes

My beautiful client Ryan Steyn from Empower Construction sent me this inspirational quote the other day ‘Don’t carry your mistakes around with you. Instead place them under your feet and use them as stepping stones’. What a great way to look at the world and turn something negative into something very positive.

Human beings are designed to learn by making mistakes.

We learn to walk by falling down and getting up again. If we never fell down, we would never know how to walk. We learn to ride a bike, surf, and play soccer etc. by falling down and getting up again.

Why are we then so afraid of making mistakes?
Unfortunately in school we learn that mistakes are bad and we are punished for making them. You didn’t pass that test, that’s not good enough, you made too many mistakes.
The fear of failing, the fear of making mistakes paralyses us and doesn’t make us step out of our comfort zone. It will ensure that we never get the things done that we would love to do and are capable of doing. What will happen is that we start avoiding situations in which we might make mistakes and this may be the biggest mistake of all.

Mistakes help us grow – embrace them.
Mistakes are part of life and help us gain knowledge and experience. They teach us about our skills, our capabilities, our passions and ourselves. If we make a mistake and learn from that, we have grown and will hopefully avoid making the same mistake in the future. If you want to embrace the philosophy of making mistakes and growing, you need to let go of being a perfectionist. Let go of your fear of challenging tasks, taking risks and get into action mode.

The other powerful tool is to learn from people who have more experience than you in a certain field and probably also have made more mistakes. Use these people as your guide, mentor and supporter along the way.

This is something that I am personally extremely passionate about when we work with business owners to set up their marketing. We focus heavily on transferring marketing skills and capability into the business and will track results on an ongoing basis. When this is combined with a non-fearful attitude, the business will gain real momentum with our marketing program.

    Thank-you for the great blog.

As a business owner its is a difficult challenge in empowering your staff while leaving the door open for them to make mistakes. They might not tackle the issues the same way I would but you have to let go and let them go.

I have no fear for mistakes I fear not doing more than anything else.
