Like most of us, I try to exercise regularly, but unfortunately, like most of us, I am sitting behind my desk in front of my computer for far too many hours (in a row). On top this, technology allows us to do more and more from the comfort of our chair, making us even more inactive.
Studies have shown that spending more than 6 hours a day sitting down drives up blood pressure and increases the risk of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases and some types of cancer. Sitting is the new smoking.
But what can you do when you make your living sitting at a desk?
The answer is to put more NEAT – Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis – into your life. This means getting up and moving around, at an easy pace, as often as possible, for as long as possible.
Here are three simple things that I have been trying to integrate into my workday.
Walk and think
I have started to take short thinking time walks throughout the day. Why would I do this behind my desk, when I actually have found to get better ideas when I am walking? And it feels better too.
Stand and talk
Instead of sitting down behind my desk talking on my mobile, I now actually take this opportunity to move around, or at least stand up. I’ve learned that you feel and sound more engaged when you are on your feet, so you’ll make a better impression on the phone if you’re up and about anyway.
Stretch and breathe
I try to take a couple of micro breaks during the day to stretch out, breathe and move my ankles and wrists. It helps to refresh and come back with more energy.
To be honest, I have my good days and my bad days, meaning that I still catch myself sitting down for far too long. But I can tell you that creativity and energy flow much better during the days when I integrate these simple actions into my day, which in the end result in better marketing and outside the box thinking.
