Marketing and fitness have a lot in common…

The right exercise program makes your body fitter, healthier and stronger, as the right marketing program will do the same for your business.

I’ve come to the conclusion that in many ways, marketing has a lot in common with fitness.

By definition, exercise takes effort. The results may not be apparent overnight, but over the long haul, they can be very significant. Not only do you look and feel better, you have the capacity to do more. Plus you are better equipped to bounce back if something goes wrong with your health.

In the same way, marketing takes effort and consistency. By making it a non-negotiable part of what you do, you are strengthening the ability of your business to retain a loyal client base, and to attract and convert more leads. Marketing done well builds brand awareness that can have a long-lasting impact. And by proactively engaging with your market, you are better prepared to manage the ups and downs of the market when they occur.

Exercise on it’s own will not give you the best results. It needs to be supported by other healthy life style changes like diet and resting time and you’ll also need the support and encouragement of people around you. Furthermore, you are more likely to succeed when you have a goal to work towards and measure your results, as well as celebrate your successes along the way. If you are not an expert in exercise, you hire a personal trainer. An experienced personal trainer will be a great help, guide and support, but you still have to do the hard work.

If you want your business to have the best results, marketing needs to be supported by the rest of your organisation. Too many times, I’ve seen marketing departments creating valuable leads, without the business having the capacity to follow up. This is a waste of energy, time and money. Having clear marketing objectives that are aligned with your business objectives is also key, as that determines what marketing program to embark on. It is not a one size fits all approach. If you yourself are not a marketing expert, get help and advice from a truthful and experienced marketing consultant, who can guide and help you and your team implement the best marketing program for your business.

When your daily exercise routine becomes a habit, you know that you have mastered making it part of your lifestyle. Too often people slack off once they feel and look better, but unfortunately you will go back to your previous state very quickly. I am sure you have heard about the yoyo effect.

This also counts for marketing. You can’t just turn it on, when you need it and turn it off when you think you don’t need it, it needs to become part of your overall business all the time to really have the right effect.
