Do you need to think creatively, find a solution to a problem or strategise and plan for your future? The best way to do this might be to step outside your office and get inspired by nature. Whether you choose to sit under a tree, go for a walk or put your feet into the ocean, it all has the same calming and clarifying effect, which leads to clear and out of the box thinking.
Get important work done!
I recently came back from a family journey through the US. Although I enjoyed the cities and the theme parks, the highlight was definitely the national parks. Being in a beautiful natural environment really helped me clear my head and look at things from a different perspective. While hiking the Grand Canyon, travelling through Death Valley and exploring Yosemite National Park, ideas just kept popping into my head. I had set no intention to think about my business, as I was on a family holiday, but I guess you simply can’t stop the creative process. As a result, I was able to clarify our purpose, direction and priorities for the next 12 months. Now that was a very nice way to get a very important piece of work done.
Everybody gets inspired!
Of course I wasn’t the only person that got inspired and got creative. My kids dreamed up their future. They told me the most wonderful stories about all the great things they are going to do in their life. One of my sons is determined to become prime minister, as he wants to promote solar energy and looking after the environment, as well as giving kids the opportunity to vote. My other son loves painting and talked about all the wonderful paintings he is going to create and how is going to become a famous artist. Then another day they brainstormed how the two of them are going to set up a restaurant with healthy and fun food for kids. I can tell you, these conversations were priceless.
Of course this wasn’t the first time, I got inspired by nature. For the past few years, I have been retreating in the Balinese jungle once a year for a week. After being in such a natural environment, I always come out completely refreshed, energised and full of great ideas.
Get inspired every day!
Of course, we don’t need to go far away, we can get great bursts of inspiration from the beautiful nature that we have around us in Sydney. I try to go for a walk along the beach most days as it really helps to stay grounded, clear and fresh. There is also nothing better than watching a beautiful sunrise in the morning. It is the promise of a new day and a new beginning.
Sasha, our head of marketing consulting, who is also a big fan of stepping into nature, shared a really interesting article with me about the positive effects on the brain of spending more time in nature.
