6am: Sunrise over Coogee Beach while Setting the Right Intention for the Day

Three and a half years ago, by coincidence I discovered yoga. I’ve always been a very active person, who sometimes needs to be calmed down. I have been an aerobics instructor for more than 10 years and love starting the day with a good workout. As I moved from my corporate job in the city to starting my own business from my home-office, I had to look for another alternative to the inner city health club. I stumbled across the newly opened Living Room in Coogee, marketed as a seaside city retreat (sounded good to me, especially the amazing view over Coogee beach) offering yoga, meditation etc.

I definitely wasn’t ready for meditation at that time, but tried yoga as a replacement for my high impact and hard-core early morning group exercise classes. I soon realised that yoga, if done properly, is a lot harder than I expected, but actually very satisfying. It kind of surprised me that I didn’t miss the other forms of exercise and was able to keep my body fit and healthy. I learned to correct my posture and all of a sudden the soreness in my shoulders and neck started to disappear.

When I finally got my breathing in line with my movements (it took me a while), my yoga practice (as I now refer to it) went to a whole new level and nowadays I am using a lot of the breathing techniques throughout my day to keep myself in balance, or to prepare myself for challenging situations. I am now also using my yoga practice as a time to release any tension that I have in my body or my mind and to set an intention for my day ahead. It simply is the best start of the day. I am much more aware of what’s going on in my body and mind and feel more in balance.

Natalie, who runs The Living Room, specialises in Alchemy yoga, which helps strengthening your internal organs. In different seasons she focuses on training different organs in line with the season, which makes your body more at ease (instead of creating dis ease). I really enjoy these inspirational and powerful classes. In fact I enjoy all the different classes and especially the community feeling that Natalie has created in The Living Room. It truly is a place where you feel very comfortable, everybody knows your name, the classes are very small, the teachers give a lot of adjustments and they really focus on educating.

Dara, one of the great yoga instructors, who does a lot on energy work, shared one of her favourite quotes with us that I would like to share with you:

“All life is energy; we are an energetic system. When our energy is flowing, we feel good and when it is interrupted we experience discomfort, contraction and suffering. When our “personal energy” is flowing and is linked to the “universal energy”, this is the meaning of the word “yoga” (yolk or union). Our role is to remove the obstacles and temporary interruptions in the flow that prevent us from achieving our fullest potential.” – Mark Breadner

This quote really hones in on the importance of positive energy and being in the flow in everything we do.
